| partners | | I was anxious to get out and hike from the new Adero Canyon Trailhead in Fountain Hills. I had hiked some of these trails before from Eagle's Nest which was a real inconvenient place to start.
The new trailhead is beautiful, paved parking lot and toilets with running water (which weren't open yet). The last section of roadway past the new Toll Brothers million dollar homes is not paved, but is smooth and wide enough to pass.
Jan and SCA joined me today for our Fountain Hills excursion. From the trailhead we jumped on Western Bike Loop which connects to Andrews-Kinsey with a stop at the Adero Canyon Overlook. Back from the overlook you jump straight onto the Western Loop and climb, climb, climb, to the top of the ridgeline and a visit to the West View Overlook. Once we tired of being blasted by the wind, we followed Western Loop down to the Promenade (jeep) Trail. It's a short walk down the road to the Sonoran / Lower Sonoran Trail split. We went clockwise and started on the Sonoran Trail. We ran into the Fountain Hills trail crew out doing trail maintenance. While the Sonoran Trail continues from the Fountain Hills Preserve into the McDowell Mountain Regional Park to Dixie Mine Trail, we turned right onto the Lower Sonoran Trail and followed that back, rising and falling across the foothills, to the Promenade Trail. It's an easy walk along the jeep road back to the trailhead. Great views of the Fountain, Four Peaks, Weaver's Needle, and Flat Iron all along the way. |
