The fun started at during the drive with a hearty night crossing of the swollen and mighty Tonto Creek which really is more of a river in this area especially after being fed snowmelt from the hundreds of canyons and drainages upstream.

Woke up early for sunrise Saturday morning and eagerly made my way upstream to the scene G-Hopper photographed thay I had painted in my mind.
When I reached the falls my heart sank a little as the fire, flood and erosion devastation was a tradegy.
The agave, prickly pear and dense green trees that used to be at the falls were obliterated and are non existent besides the few dead gray fragments of timber that stand.
Luckily the canyon itself is still so beautiful with pink granite and sheer cliff walls covered in vibrant lichen, a true “Ancha Gem”, although I am envious of those how were able to see it pre fire in its full glory.

Met up back at camp with Jon and then we all went back up and made our climb up canyon to Lion Spring.
The upper portion of the MG was luckily spared from the fire and is still a dense green wonderland with pines and agave mingling amongst other healthy vegetation.
A new scene around every corner unique cascades, icicles and charming little pools made for such a rewarding stroll and a place I’ll be certainly returning to one day.
