| partners | | gavilan peak and daisy mountain have been on our list for awhile
john suggested we hit them this morning
gavilan peak
got going around 0600 and found a decent place to park at the end of the road in a little turnaround
there have been comments about access; this part looks like it's all owned by a real estate developer
went up the west ridge
the resident pit bull mix followed us most of the way up the trail, turning back at the final scramble
gaining 750 feet in a half mile, this was a steep one
surprisingly good use trail up to a saddle, then a fun scramble up solid rock
exposure was minimal and footing was good on this part
didn't stay long on the peak, but there were good views of the surrounding area
the scramble down was fine, but the scree slide below the saddle was slow going
back to the car and on to the next one
1:06 with a four minute break
daisy mountain
found the little park @azwanderingbear mentioned and set out around 0730
the first mile and a half are pretty flat, followed by a moderate grade and then a steep ascent, especially above the saddle
the ridge was fun with great views, hitting three high points in total
went to the north summit with the flag, bench and adirondack chair but didn't stay long due to some gnats
bug free morning if you were moving
nice views, especially of gavilan, and a worthy peak
good footing on a well established trail which was nice on the descent
i would do this one again
daisy would make a nice workout hike if you lived nearby
2:19 with a three minute break
using john's mileage and my elevation gain
done by 1000, hit the brass rail for breakfast afterwards with my brother, his girlfriend and their kids
easter brunch at the ole brass rail
fun times and two new peaks
thanks john, great idea |
