You begin the hike on a steady light incline and walk through some tall ferns on a narrow, but well maintained trail. At the fork, we opted to do the side trip to Big Knoll & head towards the lookout point for Big Lake (towards the left). The trail continued to climb steadily uphill and had a few downed trees to navigate over. We passed the Spillman Spring and it was flowing nicely (we estimated a quart a minute). It’s probably one of the most unique springs I’ve seen with the log contraption. There were various fungi along the trail for the more daring. We continued on and reached a road, then noticed a short trail with rock steps up to Big Knoll lookout. There is an old railing there to assist you as it’s a bit steep. The views of the lakes were pretty but we heard thunder and felt some raindrops, so decided to head back down under the tree line. When we reached the same fork as prior, we opted to check out the trail in the other direction for a bit. We tried looking for the Reservoir tank but couldn’t see anything, so not sure where it was! We weren’t planning on doing the entire loop so after a bit we headed back to the car. We only saw a couple of small groups of people towards the beginning so that was awesome! Since we saw the view of the lakes from the hike, we stopped by and got a closer view on our way back to camp (worth a stop in my opinion)! Really peaceful day in the white mountains to be continued in my next log. |
