With FR487 open this season all the way to Aztec Peak, Lynn, Skippy and I decided to check out some of our favorite Sierra Ancha trails. From the Carr Trail Head, we made our way through the cat's claw overgrowing many sections of Parker Creek Trail 160 until we reached the junction with Rim Trail 139http://hikearizona.com/t2006/09/08/5929-888888_14.jpg. The Rim Trail is completely overgrown and the signage new 2 years ago is completely weathered and beaten! A quick exploration and blood trickling down my calves convinced us that we should continue along Parker Creek Trail 160 up to the saddle at the south end of Carr Peak.
Bugling elk could be heard with some regularity. Bear scat was deposited along a couple of spots on the trail. We met a hunter caching some jugs of water for an up coming hunt.
After enjoying the view at the saddle, we made our way back to the Carr Trail Head and on up FR487 to the summit of Aztec Peak.
Ranger Red was manning the lookout tower heading into the last week of the season. Friday 9/26 is the last day for Ranger Red and his dog Roper until next year when they start on 4/15.
Left Red some food and water as his Saturday grocery run was interrupted by transmission trouble and a tow into Globe. He could only manage a handful of groceries on his ride back to the lookout tower... |
