| partners | | I was overdue for a visit to one of my favorite places and Christmas was the perfect day for it! I wanted to see Parker canyon with a nice water flow, and I was delighted when a friend wanted to join.
We knew it was a good sign when the waterfall you can see from the highway near superior was flowing strongly. We stopped by and paid a quick visit before continuing on.
First we enjoyed some Christmas treats while admiring the view looking down into the canyon. Sooo… would love to know how this happened, but there is a motorcycle right in the bottom of the canyon! I zoomed as much as possible to see if there was anything else (anybody?!) there, but could only see the motorcycle. Based on where it landed, it seems like it might have gone over the cliff on either side of the canyon. Otherwise, a flood could have washed it down?
Anyway, we’d parked right at the overlook so we drove back down a bit closer to the drop in point to eliminate unnecessary road hiking. (Side note: the road is in the roughest condition I’ve ever seen it at the moment - could improve when it’s dry but it was 4 low for sure.) Getting into the canyon is pretty straightforward and we were immediately treated with beautiful waterfalls in many directions.
If I were solo, I probably wouldn’t have made it much further, but my hiking partner was even more familiar with the canyon. He was able to navigate us all the way to the first rappel, which was awesome. It was way more challenging to hike through there with wet rocks, as those rocks are even slippery when dry! We did get our feet wet, but it wasn’t cold enough to be too unpleasant. There is now also a fixed rope in place at the first rappel that was not there on my last visit.
The canyon was as stunning as usual, but even moreso with the water flow and moody skies. We exited the same way we came in. My mileage is off as I didn’t start recording until we were in the canyon, oops.
Stopped by a favorite lookout for sunset before the drive back to the valley. It was a Christmas well spent and didn’t see a soul in the canyon all day! |
