Driving High Creek Rd/Sunset Loop through the Sulphur Springs Valley in the Winter is a birding treat! I took about two hours to drive the 20 miles or so on the way in, with many, many stops for birding and photography. Both vehicles that drove past me while I was pulled over and out of the car stopped to ask if I was okay or needed help - both female drivers. I saw two groups of Pronghorns as well as many fantastic birds including a Golden Eagle, Horned Larks, Meadowlarks, Lark Buntings, Kestrels, Red-tails, Loggerhead Shrikes and about 60 Sandhill Cranes.
Most of High Creek Road was recently smoothed and in great shape. The first part of Sunset Loop was narrowed down to barely one lane by all the dead tumbleweeds and brush lining the road. There were Game & Fish trucks and bulldozers at the first parking/camping area on FR 660, and that road had also been graded up to the first creek crossing. Several trailers parked there that appeared unoccupied mid-week, as well as two or three regular short and long-term looking camps that may have been occupied.
I parked at the usual spot .6 miles in, and hiked the road to the beginning of the real trail and a bit beyond. The creek was flowing merrily the whole way, and I saw nobody except a couple guys just off the road a little ways in who had a firewood permit (hopefully) and were cutting down some dead trees.
Nice day.
