We seldom have much time for these weekday hikes squeezed in between the time he gets out of school and when he has to be back home in time for dinner. Doing some snooping on HAZ I found some hikes in what I would later find out is @LosDosSloFolks neighborhood. This one on the first section of the Slate Trail started at the trailhead on E. Surrey Drive in Cave Creek. I had planned on following the trail across Cave Creek but got side tracked on a couple of trails, the first one turned out to be the Louis W. Menk Nature Trail. I had a waypoint for the old Cave Creek Cemetery on my GPS so to save time we bushwhacked from the top of the small peak on the nature trail cross country to the cemetery. After the cemetery we were running out of time so headed straight back to the Slate Trail and the trailhead. On the way back we passed a covered arena where Michael had to point out to me that the hikers I saw at the far end of the arena were actually the two of us reflected in mirrors - weird. Back at the trailhead we encountered a lady walking a dog off leash. I mentioned to Michael that she was taking her pet coyote for a walk. Evidently she heard me because she shouted in an angry voice "It's a dog!" So ending our hike on that positive note we headed home. |
