| no partners | | I decided to hike up to Snow Valley Peak (elevation of 9,214 feet and prominence of 1,254 feet) while I was still in northern Nevada. This peak is in Carson City and is considered a Nevada county highpoint.
I started from Spooner Summit and went north on the Tahoe Rim Trail. This is one of the best trails that I have ever hiked -- the tread is great, and there are switchbacks in all the right places. Most of the hike was underneath pine trees, so this one would be a nice summertime hike.
The trail does not go all the way up to the summit, so I had to go offtrail for a short distance to get to the summit. There is a road leading up to the summit from the other side of the mountain, so perhaps the trail would have crossed the road, but I wasn't sure so I decided to take the shorter off-trail route.
Unfortunately it was a foggy morning so I did not get to enjoy the views, which are supposed to be outstanding. Winds were supposed to be 30-40 mph with 55 mph gusts, and fortunately it was not that windy. I would guess that winds were 25-30 mph at the summit, but it felt really cold up there.
I came back the same way that I went up.
This was a great hike, and I would do the hike again in a heartbeat -- preferably on a clear day though. |
