A hike to Mount Eddy (elevation of 9,025 feet and prominence of 5,105 feet) has been on my list for a while, and I decided to do this hike today, and I am glad that I did.

I was reluctant to do the hike, because I thought that there might be too much snow; but fortunately that did not turn out to be the case.

I started from the PCT-Parks Creek TH. Actually there was a snow bank partially blocking the road just before the TH, so I parked before the snowbank and did an extra few hundred feet of easy road walking.

This is a great trail to hike on -- the tread is good and there is a good bit of filtered shade from large conifers. I only gained about 450 feet in elevation over the first 3 miles.

Once you get past the Deadfall Lakes, the trail climbs out of the basin up to a saddle below Mount Eddy. There were a few sections of snow on the trail, so I put on microspikes, not knowing how deep the snow might be. It turned out not to be very much snow, and by the time I got to the saddle there was no snow left on the trail. From the saddle to the summit is just over a mile, and the trail was in summertime condition with no snow at all.

Unlike the other days on this trip, there were no clouds or fog, and the views along the trail and at the summit were great. I doubt if visibility ever gets any better than it was today. Mount Shasta was so close that I was tempted to add a bit of distance to my hike and check it out -- fortunately I came to my senses and did not stray in that direction from the Eddy summit. I could clearly see Lassen Peak to the south and Mount McLoughlin off to the north. To the west was a whole range of snow covered peaks.

On the way back I did not bother to put my microspikes back on. I did not see any other hikers until I was almost back to the TH, when I met two people coming up the trail.

I really enjoyed this hike, and it is a top 10 hike for me, and perhaps top 5. It has a great trail, some lakes, some creeks, and amazing scenery. I would definitely do this hike again, but I'd probably start at the Deadfall Lakes trail going through Deadfall Meadow, That route is shorter but with a bit more elevation gain than what I did today.
