From the Beeline highway you wouldn't think that there could be anything much worth hiking but once you get in you realize that this is a little gem of an oasis that should not be passed up. We did this in spring and found a beautiful little waterfall( about 4 miles in. I am not sure that it would be there in the fall.
The way in is a steady but easy climb and you don't have to be in great shape to do it as evidenced by some of the people that we passed on the way. Don't let the fact that it is a constant uphill keep you from doing this trip. The way back out is as pretty as the way in. While you can't describe it as lush it is not as arid a place as you would suspect on your way to the trailhead.
The rugged beauty of this place is what Arizona is all about. We found a few streams on the way to the falls but don't let this dissuade you from taking plenty of water. You might not find the water when you go and it is not that frequent that you find it.
I would not want to do this trip in the summer for a couple of reasons. For one it would be just too dang hot. For the other I don't think that you would find the falls flowing though I do not know this to be a fact.
We did not go much past the falls but i have heard that this is a very nice trail as well. We just wanted to keep it to an easy day hike where we could stop and smell the desert flowers.
When you get to the falls make sure and climb on up and into the falls. There is a great little place to just hang and meditate that at around noon to mid afternoon is lit up with sun and you get enough cool mist from the water to make it an incredible experience. For the more adventurous i am sure you could climb on further but i would not suggest this to the average hiker. Nor do i think that it would be anything better. The grass is not always greener up ahead. |
