I've been trying to hike a Arizona trail and this hike along with last weeks hike connected the Superstition wilderness with the Four Peeks wilderness.
I started out at the Cemetery TH, it was 38 degrees. I hike the Cemetery trail (255) to the Thompson trail (121). Turned right (west). About .65 miles into the hike you hit an intersection. There's an AZT sign showing to go straight forward. This is the horse bypass because the fork to the right is too steep for horses. I followed the AZT sign and hiked behind a butte and came back to parallel SR 188. Then you'll see a metal water box. The water box was frozen over! This is where the 'shortcut' trail connects back to the main trail. There also another AZT sign showing to take the horse bypass. After a short bit you drop down to the 88/188 /bridge intersection. This is the end of the Thompson trail. Now walk on the road to far left and watch out for cars. It's only a 3/4 mile walk on the road. On the bridge you get a great view of the dam. Right as you cross the bridge watch for where the guard rail turns from cement to metal. At this exact spot, the Vineyard trail starts. There also a 88 sign right in front of the trail sign. This trail climbs like crazy. When you flattens out , you get great views of snow covered four peaks, the lakes, and dam and the superstitions. There was still snow on the ground at this point. After a while you hike on FR336. Then the trail leave the road and climbs to a ridgeline. I hiked on 3 or 4 ridgeline before hitting the Mills TH. There a weird looking structure out in the near distance. On the way back, I checked it out. It was metal roof on the ground that feed two big PVC tubes. The tubes feed a cement water box. I guess this is a man made spring for the cattle. About 3 miles back I saw another structure in the far distance. It looked like a storage bin out in the middle of no where . I didn't see any roads by it. Maybe next time I'll check it out. I made it back to the Thompson trail and this time I took the hiker option back instead of the horse bypass. The hiker option was very steep and it was also about 1.2 mile shorter. I made it back to the TH by 5:10.
