I didn't realize it until I got home, but the summit is a short distance inside the western boundary of the Fort Apache Reservation. Mustang Ridge is about 1.4 air miles away from Sombrero Peak, and it is 22 feet higher than Sombrero.
I parked at the junction of FR 2900 and FR 202. The last 26 miles to the TH were on dirt: 16 miles on Cherry Creek Road (FR 203) and 10 miles on FR 202. Cherry Creek Road was rougher than it was the last time that I was on it, but FR 202 was in better shape than I thought it might be. I would recommend a high clearance 4WD vehicle on FR 202 though.
The first 2 miles of the hike were on roads: FR 2900 and FR 2893. If I was more of a 4WD enthusiast I would have driven these roads, but I was fine with hiking them. The rest of the hike was a somewhat unpleasant bushwhack. There was lots of pinyon pine, juniper, manzanita, gambel oak, scrub live oak, among other pleasantries. At least there was no catclaw or New Mexico locust to deal with. It wasn't the worst bushwhacking that I have ever done, but it wasn't very enjoyable either. There were no views whatsover at the summit (there were way too many trees), so there was no payoff for the effort to get there.
It was not a very efficient hike: the summit was about 900 feet higher than my starting point, but the accumulated gain was almost twice that. There was a good bit of up-and-down on the forest roads.
This is a pretty area, but the hike was underwhelming, especially considering the long drive to get out there and back. |

Wildflowers Observation None There were quite a few wildflowers on the drive in, but I saw none on the hike. |
