| no partners | | Brought a friend to the lower Gila River to see some of the sights. I put together a route that would take us past some interesting places and allow us to check out some new ones.
In practice it worked out OK: 1) somewhat more tricky than expected to get past a big "dirt area" where a side canyon hit the river (deep eroded channels), 2) the hand drawn route through the river thicket was pretty successful at getting us across the river to a familiar petroglyph site, 3) the return route was also pretty good until it hit a dense mess, and on the other side of that getting up the rocks was tougher than usual, 4) did manage to find a few petroglyphs on the upper cliff band walking back.
All-in-all I was reminded why I hadn't spent much time looking here before: too much undergrowth for happy walking. Bonus for the day was seeing some pools of water in the river bed. Must have been left from when the river flowed last winter but surprised they persisted through the summer. |
