| partners | | On our trip to Lubbock Texas Ginny and I decided to take a more scenic route to explore the Gila Wilderness area. Not a lot of time for hiking but we did check out the road to Turkey Creek. Followed that rough long road for about 10 miles before returning. Will definitely have to come back to this area when we have a few days. We were heading to Socorro for the night so we continued on highway 180. Wasn't sure where gas could be found along this highway but we found a trading post in Glenwood that sold gas. While there the lady at the post told us that we should check out the Catwalk in Whitewater Creek. Glad she mentioned it because it was quite an interesting hike. We hiked in about 1.5 miles and turned around when crossing the creek looked a little challenging, we weren't dressed for hiking. Really beautiful canyon and will have to return to continue on up the canyon on another trip here when we have more time. The canyon was very cold and in the shade most of the time this time of year. (New Mexico got a splattering of snow above 6000 feet and was still there along north facing slopes). For a more detailed description of this trail check out the CATWALK NATIONAL RECREATION TRAIL GUIDE in HAZ. The drive up Hwy 180 and 12 to Socorro had a lot of potential areas for future hiking. Maybe on another one of our Tucson Lubbock travels. |
