| partners | | Kelly invited me to hike this passage of the AZT with her since it was one she had not done yet. We got to the American Flag trailhead a few minutes before 0730 and headed north. The trail is in excellent shape, all decomposed granite, and easy to follow.
Gentle descent the first couple of miles, then some mild roller coaster. We scared three or four javelinas. The windmill seemed to be the lowest point of the trail. After that, we headed up a small hill, where we ran into seven SaddleBrooke seniors and their heeler. According to them, the dog enjoys seeking out and rolling around in human poop. I’m thinking my heeler would win an intelligience (or at least common sense) contest against that one. Harlow limits herself to anything but human poop.
After crossing under the highway, the final mile and a half or so was on a road. Saw a few vehicles, and passed two people target shooting on the east side of the road. Spent a few minutes at the Tiger Mine Road trailhead (that parking area is huge) before turning around and retracing our steps back south.
Saw the seven hikers again, but didn’t pet the dog as we were informed she had found a pile to roll around in. Maybe keep the dog on a leash? Passed a few other hikers as well. Warm at times heading towards the sun, but there was a great breeze all day. Nice to help Kelly complete one more passage on her AZT quest! |
