Next hike of the day was to visit Coronado Cave. I did no research for this hike. But I knew where it was located and I know it’s on my wife’s to do list so I thought I would check it out.

TH parking for this hike is just west of the visitor center, (maybe .25 miles). There’s enough parking for about 8 cars. Not a lot, but I honestly don’t think this cave sees a lot of action. The hike up is rather intense. There looks to have been some minor re-rioting along the way. It looks like the park service is trying to control the “use trails” that have been created by eager spelunkers

. There is a bench at close to the .3 mile mark for those who want to appreciate the views (and catch their breath). I had just done Joe’s Canton Trail and this trail is much more vertical than anything on that trail. When you start to hit the stairs you know you are getting close. The cave is more tucked away than I would have thought. You don’t see it until you are almost on top of it. The cave is bigger than I thought it would be and unfortunately there is no lighting like in Carlsbad

I didn’t bring any lighting so I didn’t descend too far into the cave. The rock hop down (into the cave) is a little tricky and I’m sure will be daunting for the wife, but I hope to come back in the near future with a headlamp to find out how daunting. I had the trail and the cave to myself. Disappointed that I didn’t come better prepared.
