Weather was beautiful - upper 70s, sunny, clear sky, constant breeze. The forest smelled great. We saw 2 deer early on. They loped away from the trail, and watched us for a minute from a ridge as we took pictures, then they wandered off. There were hundreds of squirrels and even more birds, but no bears this time. A lot of bluejays, but we couldn't get a decent pic. We spent 30-40 minutes at the peak, eating and enjoying the views. The fire lookout graciously allowed us into the tower, gave us a tour, showed us how to use the Fire Finder, showed us how to communicate with dispatch, gave us a brief history of the tower (built in 1936!), and provided details about the ongoing Wildcat Fire. The last 3 miles back to the trailhead went by pretty quickly.
We saw at least 30 people along the loop (including 2 groups of 10), about 15 dogs, 1 horse, and a lot of horse poop. Overall a very nice day in the woods. |
