During its “golden age” as part of the Roman Empire, it was known as Phillipololis, and the Roman remains are scattered around and under the city, including an excavated portion of a 30,000 seat stadium that sits directly under Plovdiv’s main walking street.
We enjoyed some running tourism and checked out the Roman theater, where theatrical performances are still enjoyed today.
We stayed in a full-blown apartment with a nice open balcony near the old town.
On the way from Plovdiv to Burgas, we took a side trip to another famous Bulgarian Monestary—Bachkovo Monestary. This one is in the Rhodope Mountains, with some amazing forests and geology, which we enjoyed on our drive. Nearby was an old fortress—Asen’s Fortress. We were tempted to hike up to it, it given the weather and a 2+ hour drive ahead to Burgas, we opted just to take a couple of photos from the road below. |
