From my researching, Grandview seemed like a good choice - great beauty, decent effort and far less people than Bright Angel. I was a bit concerned when I hit the trailhead and it was packed with cars and families. But less than a quarter mile down the trail the crowds disappeared and the canyon was all mine. Trail was in good shape for the most part, but once in the Coconino Sandstone - the trail was a bit steep and slick. Had one nasty fall as my feet came out from under me and cut up my forearm pretty good and had my right leg pinned underneath me at a potentially damaging angle. Lucky for me the knee held up fine without any pain or damage and I continued on to the mesa where the old mines are found. Here I did some exploring, had lunch and then began the very strenuous trek back out of the canyon. It took exactly double the time it did going down (as advertised) and was quite a workout - with many stops to catch my breath and take in the beauty (in that order!). Reached the top at around five where I was again joined by the many tourists. Good hike that I would recommend to anyone in shape - but do not underestimate the effort to climb out! Vegas was fun as always, but the timeless beauty of the Grand Canyon is truly magic (and I'm not talking the Sigfried and Roy variety!). |
