| no partners | | Started day out with a 6 mile Jeep ride up Peralta trail road to my parking spot .44 miles west of Carney Springs trailhead. Lefty Jeep 9am with 100oz. water in hydration pack,2 - 1 liter bottles strapped to side, 1/2 pound whole almonds, 8oz. bag of trail mix, and some beef jerky.
It was a nice sunny day with the high expected to hit 90 degrees as I hiked the half mile to Carney springs trailhead. About half way there I discovered that the bladder in my hydration pack was leaking. I promptly put bladder inside plastic bags I had brought for trash to catch leaking water for later.
I made my way up the steep trail to my first way point about half way up the trail where it levels of at a rock formation. Good spot to finish off my trail mix and have some jerky and nuts for energy. Apparently the plastic bags had also sprung a leak. I thought my backside felt a little cool and wet. So time to consume the water in my pack quick before most is lost. Hopefully there will be some run off from last week's rains on the backside.
Made my way up to the saddle at noon. Time to rest and have some lunch. I have about 8oz. of water left in my pack and 2 liters left in bottles. I should be good to complete the hike. So, off to the peak.
The trail seems to be marked much better than the last time I did this hike about 2 years ago. That was a treat as last time was kind of rough to stay on the trail. Made my way down to the creek on the backside the mountain. Some standing water but none for consumption. Still hoping for running water at the spring waterfall ahead as it runs through rocks and plant roots and is always clean and tasty when present.
Continued on along the backside trail towards the peak. I reached my waterfall to find no water running. Just finished off my hydration pack so now it time to conserve the 2 liters I have left. Lots of stops on the way up to take pictures and keep the legs loose. Finally reached the peak at 3pm. Beautiful 360 degree views and lots of photos. No cell phone coverage on T-Mobile up here so calling my wife to get the telescope out to see me is not an option. Time for some more jerky and nuts before heading down. I took a little more time than usual making my way down as my legs were feeling the burn and I didn't want to sustain an injury now.
Arrived back at the saddle at 5pm and headed down Carney Springs trail. I just started the .5 mile trek back the Jeep as the sun was setting. I arrived back at the Jeep at 6:30pm just as it got dark. Looks like headlights will be guiding my way out. |
