Writer/artist Marshal South and his wife Tanya decided to leave conventional lifestyle behind and homestead on the ridge of Ghost Mountain at the southern end of Blair Valley. He named his place Yaquitepec, and the couple lived there from 1930 to 1946. Three children were born to the couple during their stay. In the 65 years the place has been abandoned it has pretty much been reclaimed by the land.
The man was considered a talented writer, and his articles describing life on the mountain appeared regularly in Desert Magazine during the 1940's. Tanya also contributed poetry to the magazine. There always seems to eventually be trouble in paradise, and the couple went through an acrimonious breakup late in 1946. Marshal's health was failing and he died in late 1948, at age 59. Meanwhile, Tanya continued writing poetry for Desert Magazine until 1959. She died in 1997, at age 99.
They certainly picked a neat spot to live; the views up there are outstanding. |
