Following my visit to Salvation Mountain and Slab City, I headed over to the Red Hill Area to see if I could find some recently discovered mud volcanoes. On a visit to the Salton Sea History Museum in Mecca the previous day, Jennie Kelly told they were north of Red Hill and that if the road was dry I might be able to drive to them. These are west of the more well known ones at Schrimpf and Wister Roads. I stopped by those on the way over, but didn't walk over to them since a university group from Pomona was taking field measurements. When I got to the place where the approximate 2 mile drive/walk to the new mud volcanoes begins, I determined that it was just too wet and muddy to risk getting the truck stuck. I didn't have enough time to do this on foot (nor the inclination), so not today. Went over to Red Hill and hiked to the top, something I didn't do last year. Hey, it's not everyday you can bag a peak that is -127 feet below sea level! :lol:

Red Hill was a real volcano, unlike the mud pots. Plenty of obsidian found there. I stopped briefly at the nearby Sonny Bono Salton Sea NWR visitor center, before heading down to Brawley for gas and ice. Then it was off to Borrego Springs.
