| partners | | While working at First Water Trailhead yesterday, there was water running in many places that hadn't seen water in a couple of months so I naturally figured that Massacre Falls should be the next best place to visit. I called Mike yesterday and we made plans to hit the trails around 0800 today from the Crosscut Trailhead along First Water Road.
It was a beautiful morning for hiking and we were among the first vehicles in the parking lot as we got into our gear, reset the GPS's and hit the trails. It's surprising how the desert changed color from a drab burnt look to a welcome green appearance in just the last couple of days, flowers are blooming and even the lichen has changed color, all thanks to the recent rains
Birds are singing and lots of signs of wildlife along the trails, but I'm still waiting to run into that bunch of Mule Deer that're hanging out in this area Soon we were ascending the flanks of hill 2636 (the sharp pointy one) and constantly pausing to take in the views of the Goldfields behind us, Four Peaks off to the North and Superstition Mountain dead ahead of us. We were hiking at such a leisurely pace that soon we were being passed by other hikers heading to see the "falls" so we picked it up a bit to avoid the crowds that surely were coming too.
Once on top of the Wall, we could see that there was minimal flow coming over the rocks but I wanted Mike to see it up close and personal so we kept on going while most hikers decided that it wasn't worth the extra time and distance to view some wet rocks. We finally got into the shaded gorge below the falls and although there was only drops of water falling from above, it was still worth the effort to see if from this view and there was only one other hiker person to share the experience with.
After taking some photos of the falls, we began our return trek on trails that were quickly filling with hikers and horses. The sun was warmer now so I'm glad we got an early start and for a while, at least, had the desert and trails all to ourselves when we could best enjoy it. This was my fifth hike to the falls and even with this minimal flow, it's the most water I've seen yet so I'm getting better. A couple more trips and maybe I'll see a real flow
Thanks for accompanying me Mike, it was a good hike into a scenic area of the Superstitions and to finish off the morning, we sat on the tailgate, opened a cold brew and had some Salted-in-the-shell Peanuts..... a tribute to my brother Doug. |

On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip. |
