As many of my clueless hikes begin, that is with no real theme in mind, this theme developed within the first half mile. I began concentrating on bird life. Blame it on a gorgeous afternoon. And then there was the desert aroma -- a little sweeter than creosote. I was unalcoholically intoxicated. Anyway, birds. Plenty of gabbling quail, and when I sat down for lunch on a flat rock at the 7th Ave TH, a what? screaming quail. A single "yah-oh." Breeding season? Also a few Say's Phoebes, one happy curve-bill thrasher singing atop a saguaro, a white-crowned sparrow (? thrown off by two white eye stripes) and numerous doves. Desert is lush right now. The big ravine leading up to the N dam has a green carpet an ankle deep and the rest of the park is covered with a "lawn." Curious sight of the day: A woman hiking toward me with what appeared a workout bag slung over the right shoulder. In passing I saw the bag was a dog of medium size. Hmmm. It was quite happy, so it appeared. Did a jag toward the N dam as I approached the VC wanting to get over the hump of 4 miles. |
