BV is less than 1.5 hours from the house and I have been looking for a place close by to get the whitewater kayak out. Salida is not much farther, but tends to be more crowded. They have nice maintained trails on both sides of the river with beach access by all the major surf holes. Good place to get back into it after years away. Micah enjoyed playing in the shallows as we watched surfers and kayakers and the occasional raft. Parking and Paddling are free. There is 19 miles of whitewater below the footbridge that is the put in for the river park most of which is doable although the only stuff I would feel comfortable with on my own is the class III in the river park. Water levels are down which is great for getting back into it. Found some pretty good dispersed camping for our weekend. Hit the heritage museum and on the way out saw the huge cloud of smoke billowing up from the Hayden Pass fire. Unfortunately, by the time we got home it seems to be filling Ute pass as well with smoke. Pikes Peak is not visible even from Woodland Park and it is pretty prominent from Wilkerson Pass almost 50 miles away. It's even starting to obscure Waldo Canyon. My eyes started burning on the way home from the smoke so it's pretty thick. May put off the big hike I planned for Tues. |
