| no partners | | Ah yes, the Wave Cave. What can you say about this little hike? I can remember when it was not the phenomenon it is now. There is a reason so many people head up here. It's an interesting place. But, the fact that so many people do head up there, many other people, especially HAZers I would guess (myself included), avoid this place.
I go to the Supes for solitude and I can find it, even at the Wave Cave. I started up in the dark and made it to the cave about 30 minutes before sunrise. No crowd, no never-ending stream of hikers heading up to take turns posing on the wave. I had the place to myself the entire time I was there. I came up for some nice sunrise pictures and to explore the area above the cave a little. Mission accomplished.
By the time I came around from looking around up top, there were 2-3 parties already at the cave. I counted at least 40 other hikers on the way down. I helped 2 groups by stopping them from heading up Carney Springs and turning them around.
The good - the trail is very worn from traffic, but I saw very little trash. I used to see beer bottles and food wrappers back in the day up there. The bad - someone already stole the new "Wave Cave Trail" sign....ha ha. The graffiti on the wave is still there. And, this hike shows no sign of slowing down on the number of people going up. The parking lot had one car in it when I arrived, probably a ridgeline shuttle. When I got back at 9am, it was already overflowing into the street. Some dummy parked so close to my truck I had to do a 12 point pull out to escape. I was tempted to add some decoration to his door with my foot, but I decided against it. Karma will catch up with him one day, I am sure.
I got my solitude, a short workout, some nice pictures and an enjoyable morning in the Superstitions. So, win, win, win and win for me. I will just do what I do in hiking season in the Supes - start really early or hit trails not on the FB/Instagram radar (yet). |
