It turns out that riding a road bike would have been fine as well. The ride took me downhill the entire time, so I turned around after 8.5 miles because I wasn't sure how I was going to do going back up. Next time I will park near Essex and ride uphill first! Along the way I found the reason for the closure is a washed-out bridge. I don't know if there are any plans to fix it. Apparently, California is too broke to take care of all its roads. This has been closed for at least two or three years, that I know of.
Route 66 is closed right now all the way to Amboy, I believe, plus a spur of it is closed between Fenner and Essex. I saw four vehicles on my ride. Basically I had the highway to myself. It was great! Nice day, not too windy, but quite chilly to start out with. A sign at the beginning of the closure says "Residents Only." |
