| partners | | We met HAZ member Tibber for the first time at the New Years Topper hike to Bart Benchmark. We casually mentioned we had some little used trails that entered into the CCRP trail complex and that she should come up and hike with us sometime. We never expected she would actually take us up on it.  Maybe her sense of adventure is piqued by 'slumming' with the new (and slower) HAZ members. 
Anyway, mid morning start from the "secret" Surrey Hills Trailhead in Cave Creek for the girls while I drove to the P.A. Seitts trailhead which would be our exit point later in the day. Route shown in photoset. I hiked in and met them on the far eastern end of the Slate Trail. We did a quick climb up the Louis Menk Overlook Trail and then north to see the old Cave Creek cemetery where over 30 original settlers are still interred.
After rock hopping across the creek we took the Military Trail up through Go John Canyon, then over to the Quartz Trail using the new Flat Rock connector. We opted to loop around back to the Slate using the Go John to add some distance and AEG. My GPS had us at 9.1 miles but Tibber's Route Scout showed 8.2 so I'm going with that. Speaking of Route Scout, Joe's @joebartels app on Angela's phone scared the bejeezus out of me. Every mile this thing makes a different noise and then tells you pertinent info regarding your hike. I've never heard this thing before but the time I did today it made a rattlesnake noise that almost made me soil myself. At least I didn't scream.
We saw some nice looking horses on the trail along with a few hikers and mountain bikers. For a weekend I thought it would be busier. After the hike we went to Tonto Bar and Grill for a late lunch and some adult beverages. No photos, but it was G-O-O-D tasty! Thanks for joining us Angela...HAZ rocks! |
