Only saw 2 other groups of hikers as we neared the trailhead on the return. There is a sign just past the school on Peralta Road stating the road was closed and all trails were closed but I had called the FS earlier in the week to confirm the closure order was lifted and the trailhead and trails were open so we continued.
Peralta Canyon is untouched until you near Fremont Saddle then signs of the fire is seen and the damage continues over the saddle. Around the base of Weavers from a distance it appears little survived but you can see where the fire fighters made a stand to keep the fire in a “bowl” where red slurry is seen across the ridge lines and at the far end of the Needle base. The Lone Pine survived which was great to see. Barks Canyon didn’t look too bad but the damage at the base and across the top of Bluff Spring Mountain looked to be high.
Even with the fire damage over the last two years, the Superstition Mountains still, and will always, hold a special place in my heart. |
