Arrived at the TH about 0740 and started hiking close to 0800. Passed several groups ahead of us on the climb up and exited the trail at the @wallyfrack point to hike the horseshoe loop in a CW direction. Great views along the way and the off trail hiking was easy to moderate which was nice. One of my goals was to check out a campsite on one of the lower saddles but I was unable to locate a safe way down from the top so we continued the horseshoe loop jumping back on Boulder Canyon and then dropped down to La Barge Canyon and hoofed it up a very steep, loose scree, route to the saddle. Had lunch at the campsite on the saddle. During our break we saw what looked like a doable route back up to the ridge which worked out great and saved us probably 30-40 minutes.
Boulder Canyon Trail was normal busy for a holiday weekend but saw no others while we were off trail. Temps were really nice, warm but the cool breeze made it comfortable hiking in pants and a long sleeve. |
