Drove north to Winona, just east of Flagstaff, and from the I-40 frontage road followed two Subaru spurs south to ruins. The first one was like many others I've been to in the general area: a few rooms in a line (5 or 6 for this one), with some extra stone work at one end. Surrounded by pottery. The next one, a few miles away, was smaller and located on a low hilltop.
From here I planned to drive south on a dirt road from Twin Arrows, over Anderson Mesa to Mormon Lake then Stoneman Lake then back to Phoenix (this is the scenic drive part). I tried to shortcut my way over to Twin Arrows (I was only two miles or so away) but you couldn't get there from here and I had to backtrack and take the Interstate.
Next stop was to get to a fort overlooking Padre Canyon and was the only walk long enough to bring a backpack. This turned out to be a cool spot with multiple defensive walls, a room block right at the very top, and a lot of other wall structures built on the good size peninsula.
Continuing my drive south I parked at the bottom of Anderson Mesa and visited a couple other ruins in the woods there. Back home past Mormon and Stoneman Lakes...nice pandemic break. |
