| no partners | | Last week we had to abort our hike up to the old Mormon Girl Mine on Black Mountain in Cave Creek. We weren't equipped with the proper footwear or clothing for the steep bushwhack scramble up the hill. We were prepared this time however and made it up to most of the areas we wanted to see.
Our main goal was to find the main entrance which is horizontal in nature. We found about a dozen verticle shafts which I believe were used for ventilation and also for hauling the gold ore to the surface. We found a 150' length of steel cable used with the pulley system near one of these deep shafts.
There is a video on YouTube that was made only two years ago of a couple of kids exploring the deep innards of the mine along with loads of bats. That entrance is either well hidden now or possibly sealed off, I'm not sure. There is still one area we didn't get to that may reveal the true entrance. Stay tuned.  |
