| no partners | | Started out by the Tomahawk TH and hiked the road in. My intent on this was to try to get to the top of the Top Hat. Andy assured me that there is an actual trail that goes up there. I started up along a track that he had but I didn't see any trail. I got away from the track and followed what looked like the path of least resistance from the vegetation. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for that to get close to a ravine with some exposure, as well as a steep incline covered with scree. I headed back down and saw where the route was saying to go, which looked doable, but by no means a trail. I decided to bail on this and hike Horse With No Name and loop back to Tomahawk Mine Road and head back. I saw the back end of the loop on the Top Hat as I made my way around. That looked easier to hike, but again no sign of even a faint trail. Horse with No Name I think is the best trail out here and easily has the most fantastic views. Saw a bees nest along that trail under a rock overhang.
Temperature was actually a bit chilly when I started, but warmed up within 10 minutes. Only saw one snake, and it wasn't a rattler, probably a gopher snake. It took off before I could get a pic. No other hikers all day, just a few 4wds. The solitude out here is just a nice as the scenery getting away from the crowds. |
