The Tomahawk Trail (road) that I had done last time gave some nice views and was easy to get to. My daughter was getting her 2nd vaccination shot today at 2pm, so we had to pick something shorter and close by.
We hiked on the main road from the trailhead a mile and a quarter in, where there is a junction with a single track. That section lasts just over a half mile, then hits another mining road. We took that road almost down to the Goldfield mining town tourist trap, then doubled back and took another road over the hill back to the trailhead. On the mining road, at the high point we saw some concrete structures, not sure what their purpose was exactly. Found a horseshoe along the lower section of the road by the Hidden Hillside mines.
On the way back I found another short section of a faint horse trail that went to the road that took us up and over the hill to the trailhead. It was very steep in a few sections, but nothing bad. the views up at the top were really nice. Even hiking the mining roads in this area makes for great scenery.
Saw 2 hikers on their way back in along the main road when we started. Later on we saw a side by side crawling along the rough mining roads. Weather was great. Breezy, cool and sunny. Finished in 2 hours and called it a day. |
