| partners | | I last hiked this 15 years ago but it's been recently rerouted on the south end because it's part of the AZT now and they don't want the trail to be on dirt roads, only singletrack. No word yet on how they'll figure out the bridge across Roosevelt Lake.
Wally and I started from the Bushnell Tanks TH. It was actually a bit chilly when we started at 6:15a, but that lasted all of 3 minutes. The rerouted section is easy to see when it starts and all along it looks pretty fresh and is easy to hike. Lots of the trees next to the trail have very fresh cuts of limbs to make room for the trail. Once the reroute ends, it's pretty obvious because the old trail is rocky and lumpy.
Wally seemed to be taking an inordinate amount of pictures of Mt. Ord for some reason. I spotted a group of 4 or 5 deer in the valley below the trail running through the trees. On the way back Wally spotted 4 deer on the trail near the same spot, so I'm thinking it was the same deer.
Hiked out to the 6 mile mark from the TH, just past the power lines, and then headed back. The scenery up where we turned around was the best of the day. Much greener up here than back in Phoenix now, and still some wildflowers around.
Halfway back we stopped for lunch and fought off the gnats. Finished up in a little over 5 hours. The trailhead was pretty busy with people just pulling in for a bit and then leaving, also saw some hikers who arrived at the same time we did.
As we left, we spotted Bruce's vehicle. Only when I was home and had to run out to the store did I spot the artwork Bruce left on the hood of my car. Touche, . |
