Drove up to Lunch Peak and hopped on the Pend Oreille Divide Trail, heading north. The trail is in generally good condition, rocky in a few places, and easy to follow. Nice views most of the way too. The descent off Lunch Peak is fun—gentle grade, and crossing several talus slopes.
A gentle ascent follows. Passed the junction with Gordon Creek trail, which I’ve done before. After that junction, this hike was all familiar territory for me. Still some snow patches, which the dog loved. She would have played in those snow patches all day if we had let her.
Steeper descent down towards the junction with Lake Darling Trail—another one I’ve hiked a few times. Also where we got our first glimpse of Mt Pend Oreille for the day. After that junction, the steep ascent to the summit began. Took the right fork (which now has a brand new sign) to leave the Divide Trail and head up to the summit. Slower going, and rocky. Great breeze at the top, almost chilly, and excellent views in all directions. Took a good lunch break, then retraced our steps down.
Fairly easy hike back, although you do gain elevation along the way. The dog tried to eat a Western Toad, earning herself a foaming mouth, and a short break to rinse her mouth with a bottle of water. I think she’s fine. For a “heavy use” trail, we only saw five or six other hikers all day. Perfect weather, in the 60s the entire time.
The road to Lunch Peak was graded a year or two ago, and nearly any vehicle could make it all the way to the trailhead if the road is dry. |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate At least a dozen varieties of flowers, not sure what they all were. Still early in the season though. |
