Opted for an easy hike, which was a repeat from last summer. Headed up Cabin Trail, which is in good condition, and not very steep. Pleasant hike through the trees. Lots of mosquitos though.

The cabin is now padlocked shut, which is kind of a bummer. We took a break in the shade of the front porch before continuing uphill. The intersecting trail at the top used to be called E Boundary, but is now named Equinox. Took a right on Equinox to head south over towards the top of Unchained Trail. Lots of flowers along Equinox, and a little toasty in the sun.

Pointed out the spot along the trail where Wyatt and I saw a black bear last year. Maybe ten minutes later, I heard a noise in a tree ahead of us and spotted a bear cub more than halfway up the tree. First thought was “where’s mama???” A second later, a second cub appeared with the first as they both climbed the tree. Took some pics as I was looking around for mom. She appeared in the lower part of the tree, huffing and snorting at us. Took some more pics as I debated our options—it was just me with the kids (all teenagers, but still kids) and a dog, and the trail continued directly under that tree. Mama was already upset with us, so I didn’t want to go any closer. I don’t know the area well enough to pick a safe detour through the dense vegetation. And there is nothing exciting on Unchained Trail to make me really want to find a way past. We were roughly at the midpoint on our loop, so I decided we’d just turn around and retrace our steps back down Cabin Trail. So no loop for us today, but seeing the bears was the highlight for the kids. Two hikes out here have now yielded four bears.

Uneventful hike back down Cabin Trail, but a little humid and warm. There were some thunderheads nearby, although no shade or breeze for us. Fun day on some easy trails.
