| no partners | | Once restricted by a ranch which allowed access seemingly on a certain whim. Now open to the public ( gosh darn it) I motored on back in to an area I have been to several times; the last about 7 years ago. I had a couple of goals and now have a bunch more new ones.
When my ex and I hiked the Cobre Grande trail out of Landsman Camp it was followable but he was in the lead and I didn't pay much attention. Over 12+ years and no maintenance I had a hard time in spots staying on it. My thought of topping out on Cobre Grande peak went out the window; I am not much of a peakbagger anyway. Coming back I spotted a long yellow strip; an abandoned road. I bushwaked over to it, very unpleasant thru manzanita and lots of agaves. One plus was an absolute beautiful crystal rock display strewn over the ridgeline in small open areas. Already planning my return for that. The road was pleasant but overgrown. It dumped me into a small mining area that you can drive to but I went thru a small canyon amazingly stocked with quite a few maples, some with color.
I was pretty beat up but then relocated and hiked another mining road infested with catclaw but went into a beautiful little rocky canyon to an old timers' mine portal that was open. Not a huge mine but fun to walk and one room I boxed in a ringtail. The poor thing seemed very confused by my super bright light like it was blinded. I took a few pictures and retreated so there would be no full on panic.
The drift had a lower level that I will return to. I think I can make it with a handline or two to finish out the exploration.
Car camp on a high knoll with forever views. No traffic. Next day up an old jeep trail to a hill top prospect. Looks like they blew up the top of the hill. Nice ore tho and some color, azurite and malachite among others. Views along the high road revealed some serious mine tailings across the way and no easy way to it that I could see. An old fireplace ruin. Multiple spring areas but no surface water seen but I did not explore them thoroughly.
A great newish area to explore. The hoards have not discovered it yet. |
