| partners | | Another trip up to Highline to continue knocking off sections. This time, we wanted to pick up where we left off last week, so we drove up FS31, where recent mastication was done on the Manzi, leaving the road in pretty decent shape, with the last couple hundred feet pretty rocky but not horrible. We headed east before hitting our stopping point last week at just under a mile in. We continued east, stopping in the pine forest on Roberts Mesa, taking a break there before heading back. On the hike back, we came across a trail crew changing out a stick/wire fence for a Highline gate (S was the first one to use it lol), a solo hiker, and a mountain biker heading east. Except for a tenth of a mile or so, this entire section was a pretty recent reroute that no longer drops down and runs along Ellison Creek before climbing back out. Instead, it stays 'high' contouring around before meeting up with the old alignment just south of Myrtle Point. It definitely added some mileage but reduces the AEG, which I like. Also, the Myrtle Trail junction was moved east; there are a good number of carins at the junction to let you know. Tons and tons of Elk tracks all along this section, as well as bear tracks and fresh scat. I did see the back half of an elk near one of the drainages, but it ran before I could see if it was a cow or bull.
The weather was a bit chilly in the morning with the high clouds and wind, but warmed up to the mid 60's in the afternoon, which is nearly perfect. Another section checked off, with several more to go. |
