I decided to see if we could make it to to the First Water TH because I mistakenly thought it was closer to the turnoff to the Massacre TH. At the First Water TH, we saw the Wallymobile. we took the end section of the Lost Dutchman Trail (which I never saw before) out to FR78 and took FR78 back to the road to the Massacre TH and up to the falls.
Just before we got to the falls, we lost the trail and had to do some bushwhacking. John had taken the lead at this point, which we let him do because he seemed to be the most familiar with the area, knowing the difference in location between the falls and the actual massacre grounds. At some point during this bushwhack, I began to feel like Han Solo and John was Obi-wan Kenobi (where are you taking us, old guy?). John proved to be as wise as Obi-wan as he took us right there. Other than the point where I wiped out and almost broke my arm, everything was smooth.
On the way back, we made our way up Massacre Ramp and looked down over the the "ground". The dropoff is steep and very high. The views of Four Peaks were phenomenal due to the low snow line that was very defined. On the way back from Massacre TH to First Water TH we took the old jeep road that goes east instead of north to FR78. The GPS route I uploaded shows the route that we took.
Back at the Th we ran into Wally and Boon and also saw Groth, who I hiked Mt. Wrightson with last August. I also spotted another Xterra with a HAZ window decal in the exact same spot I have mine on (lower left corner of the rear hatch window). Looked like it was HAZ Day in the western Supes today. |
