| no partners | | I got up really early this morning-- really early. I was at the TH at about 6am and it was still dark but only had to do the first half mile with a headlamp. My original plan was to either hike the super loop and come around Red Tanks and Whiskey or to do an out and back to the Woodbury TH-- both pretty long hikes.
Coffee Flat trail is pretty much a mess from when you first enter private land all the way to Dripping Springs. I lost a lot of time finding my way and fighting through catclaw. I made it to Dripping Springs and realized two things-- I probably didn't have enough time to make it to Woodbury and back before dark and that if the Coffee Flat trail was so bad and annoying, then from the recent triplogs Red Tanks must be awful. I would have had time if I had given up on the trail earlier and headed up the wash but I wasn't thinking smart. I turned around at Dripping Springs after exploring up the wash that parallels Red Tanks for a short distance. I left the trail and took the wash back as far as I could and it was like speeding down the highway compared to messing with the trail. I wish I had done that earlier. In retrospect, I'm glad that I at least didn't try to make it to Woodbury and back. I talked to the Tonto trail host volunteer when I got back to Peralta and he pretty much said that section of trail was an ugly waste of time. I had a pleasant morning, though. It was nice to be on the trail as day broke. |
