| no partners | | My 2nd trip up to the McInery Tunnel (aka the Mammoth or Triumph tunnel) on the northern slope of Mt Graham. The tunnel was dug in the early 1900's and ended up being a giant stock swindle. Could only find 1 article on the web for anyone interested in the history of this tunnel.

The tunnel can be reached via the very rocky 4x4 FS 681A road, but I chose to hike to it from Pond 3 at Cluff Ranch. Started out on the pond 3 loop and made my way up and along the mesas, then down offtrail across the desert to 681A. I then took the road up, stopping at some corrals and resting a bit from the heat before climbing the rest of the way up to the tunnel. Lots of clouds kept the 100+ temps bearable and I was pleasantly surprized to feel a very cold breeze coming from the tunnel! Spent about an hour at the tunnel before returning back to Cluff Ranch. This is such an interesting and relatively unknown part of Graham County history that will have me coming back for more in the future! |
