| no partners | | My friend Jim and I launched his small flat bottomed boat and headed up the lake for Skeleton Cave. We had explored the area earlier and found a place to tie the boat that would lead us up to a mezzanine where we could begin our hike to the Cave. At the water we saw a white square painted on a rock. We tied the boat to a tree just south of the painted rock. We had placed cairns when there a week before and followed them up to the mezzanine.
From there, it was a difficult hike. We ran into vertical walls that we could not negotiate on several tries. We suffered many scratches from catclaw and had picked up cactus barbs going up as well as on our return. Our persistence won out and we made it to the cave after 2 1/2 hours. On the way down, we set cairns to mark an easier route than made on the way in. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get back to the boat. On the way out we spotted sheep that are pictured.
The next day, our hiking club (12 people)rented a pontoon and returned to the cave.The pontoon rental was for 5 hours, so we needed to time the outing to boat to the trail head, hike to the cave and return to the marina in that time. It worked perfectly. On the pontoon ride in, we saw 6 sheep again together on a mountainside as well as two eagles perched above the lake to watch our progress. |
