Six hours with only the reassuring crunch of the trail under boots, the occasional whisper of the breeze, the haunting song of the canyon wren, insects buzzing, the gentle creaking of pack straps, and the steady rush of breathing. Legs pumping out a tireless tattoo. Knees happy. Consistent power uphill. Dependable, pain-free brakes downhill. A perfect confluence that happens so easily early in life, and far less so later on. I am deeply thankful for what I experienced today. If only all my hikes were like this one.
This is a gorgeous loop. Just wonderful. Out of Peralta TH, up Bluff Spring Trail into Bark's Canyon, along the Terrapin Trail (brushy, needs a visit from the trail maintenance fairies), a short chunk of the Dutchman, and back on the Peralta. You get to see Weaver's Needle from every aspect. If you like boulders, saguaros, canyons, cliffs, peaks, and hoodoos, this is the place!
Water in most drainages. No biting insects and no gnats in the mouth or nose (yet). High of maybe 75F up there. Delightful! |
