| no partners | | the last segment of the Maricopa Trail was recently completed and the maps are updated on their website. the farthest west segment is 19 miles. I think there must be some alternate parking areas along the way there. The weather is too hot now for me to even think about attempting a longer hike. But from Westar Drive the trail heads east to Estrella Mountain park, and is just under 5 miles one way. That looked doable.
At Westar Drive there is a trailhead for another trail system called the Fantasy Island Northern Singletrack (FINS). I parked there and quickly found an MT trail marker and followed it. The first mile goes through a subdivision in typical MT urban hiking fashion. then it follows some sections of dirt roads, alternating with sections of singletrack connecting them until the final 2 mile segment of singletrack that connects to the Crossover Trail in Estrella Park. This last segment is the best part of the trail, and it's pretty bland. The views of Estrella Mountain are nice, as well as the faraway views to the south and west. Not much else to see, but it took care of my near pathological need to always hike a new trail.
the heat was kicking in pretty good today. Felt pretty drained when I was done. the AC felt much better and with yardwork later in the day, I spent most of the day hydrating. |
