I drove about 3 miles on a mining road that runs off of Salome Road. The road is a decent dirt road -- I think that faux wheel drive with decent clearance could make the drive, and you can do so without getting pinstripes. I don't think that this road shows up on topo maps, but I was able to see on a satellite view.
I was unable to come up with a good route for the hike, so I followed the ascent route that @Outlander posted on HAZ many, many moons ago. There is no clear cut, obvious way to get up to the summit, but I managed to make it. There were some steep sections with loose terrain, along with a bit of class 3 climbing. There were some rock outcroppings, false summits, and other obstacles in the way, which made the going slow for me.
This was a worthy climb, and I enjoyed the ascent. I took a well deserved break at the summit before heading back down. On the way down I really didn't want to deal with some of the obstacles that I encountered on the way up, so I decided to head down a gully to the west shortly after leaving the summit. The gully was very steep, but manageable; and it enabled me to bypass the false summits and class 3 climbing that I encountered on my way up.
After descending down the gully a good ways, I traversed around to the south to head back to where I had parked. Along the way I spotted a road off to the west, so I descended down to it. It turned out to be the road that I started the hike on, so I followed it for about 3/4 mile to get me back to my vehicle. The descent route worked fine, but I am not sure that I would want to ascend that way.
Synopsis
This was a worthy summit that was tougher than I thought that it would be. Even though I made it to the summit, in some respects the mountain won. |
