Yesterday evening an ABA Rare Bird Alert came across Facebook and email ... someone had found and photographed a Blue-black Grassquit at Cluff Ranch. Very exciting, since this bird has never been documented in the U.S. It's normal range is South and Central America, and it has never been found with 300 miles of Arizona ... until now!
I set my alarm for 4:20 am, hoping to go see it before a bunch of birders showed up from farther away - and then get to work on time. I decided it was too early, but I woke up again at 5:40 and figured I still had time. 30 minute drive, spent 30 minutes there watching and photographing the bird - and mingling with about a dozen other early arrivals - then 30 minutes to home and went on duty by 8 am. A full morning! 😁
Definitely the rarest bird I've seen yet - never thought I'd get an ABA 1st in my home county. Now it's up to the experts to decide if the bird will "count" or not, since there is some talk of it possibly being an escaped captive. IDC either way - I just wanted to see it, and that can all be sorted out later.
Life bird #343!
