| no partners | | I am not sure how many times I have hiked up this trail, but I always like it. It's way too crowded during hiking season, but a little more bearable in the summer when the crowds thin out. I have never hiked up here at night, and I wanted to get some astro pictures of the canyon and the petroglyphs. So, I waited for a clear and cool evening and headed up. No problems with crowds or parking as I was the only one out there last night. I saw or heard no other humans. I did see another truck in the parking lot when I came down about 1130pm. But, I saw and heard nobody out on the trail when I was out there.
The moon was not up and in hindsight, it might have been better for me with a little illumination on the cliffs. It was dark and bit cold. The trail is very easy to follow and seems to be in good shape. I was happy to see minimal signs of human activity when I was walking around up there. But, I did notice (and almost stepped in) the large number of dog poops left along the trail. Come on dog people, pick up after your pets!
I stay for a few hours as I was taking a large number of shots for a star trail composite. I noticed the tops of the mountain were very well lit up from the light pollution from Phoenix, but the inside of canyon was pitch dark. When I would turn off my headlamp, it was extremely dark. Even after my eyes adjusted, I could barely make out the trail and the rocks.
This is a great canyon and it's even better the further up you go.
