We'd previously hiked the shorter Kea Point Lookout from this trailhead on a previous Aotearoa trip. The first swingbridge past Mueller Lake Lookout was damaged and closed in June 2019, so it was nice to tick this one off on our current trip. I'd compare this tramp to a South Kaibab hike to Ooh Aah Point in the Grand Canyon. Mileage is vastly different, elevation gain about the same, along with the diverse tourist crowds. Besides the stunning views of Aoraki, Hooker Lake and what remains of the glaciers, another highlight was the occasional crackling of the ice fields located below Mount Sefton and The Footstool. We could feel the massive crashing chunks reverbate throughout the valleys. It was a beautifully cold sunny day after three days of the muggy West Coast. Our friends' bach in Omarama is a perfect basecamp for access to the east side. Looking forward at returning for one of the technical summits and perhaps completing the A2O someday. |
